In an effort to fill out my soon to be new, printed portfolio I have been thinking of different shoots over the past little while. Getting them done is the hard part. With a busy work schedule (I get about 3 days off this december!) as well as other commitments. This is one of them and also marks the first stills shoot using my anamorphic video adapter. Been dying to try it for a while.

It's a little acoustic video of my friend Michael Wickens playing an old blues song. I filmed it with my new Canon 5d mark 2, in anamorphic using some rode mics and a zoom H4n.

I'm a pretty big movie fan. My go to movie when I can't decide on what to watch seems to be Blade Runner lately. While I wouldn't call this a Blade Runner themed shoot, I must admit the mood and colour palette are definitely inspired by the movie. It is hard not to be inspired watching this movie. A tremendous amount of skill and art went into making this film. If you haven't seen it and like Sci-fi I recommend you see it! Make sure you watch the final cut.

Also if the image seems large it is because I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Pretty close to what I was picturing, and there is a good amount of detail to look at

This is just a test shot for lighting that I liked so I'm tacking it on here.

Just got 3 rolls of 120 Provia back and I'm working on digitizing them now. This was at the beginning of one of the rolls so I figured I'd throw it up by itself.

When I bought my first few rolls of 120, one of the rolls was a Kodak negative film. I figured I would try it in the mix and see if I could digitize it using the same lightbox/DSLR method. Plus I had never shot slide film so I wanted another option just incase. I don't think I will be using neg film again for this process. It just takes so much longer to get it looking good than the positive film. Plus I'm not quite sure it is using the full potential of the information the negative holds, while the slides look quite full. There is also a big issue overcoming the orange base of neg film, as well as inverting the image and dealing with weird colour shifts. Anyways, here are my favourites from the roll.

It's been a while since I've posted anything. Been pretty busy lately with moving into another new place downtown. I've also started a new full time job that's been keeping me pretty busy. Been doing some shooting and organizing to print a new portfolio. Recently picked up a new-to-me medium format film camera. Got the first two rolls of reversal film back and "scanned" them using a light box I made with found materials and a DSLR with a macro lens. Hope you enjoy.

Just purchased a new computer and I've been playing around on it using old photos found on some external hard drives . One of the things I miss most about going to College is living on residence. One of the things I miss most about residence is how I shot pretty much all of my photography that required to be shot in studio, in my residence kitchen. I took this photo in the first week of my last year in school. I never liked the photos from this little for-fun-shoot before, but I guess I look at photographs different now, and certainly edit them a bit differently. Either way I kind of enjoy this photograph for whatever reason right now. Probably just nostalgia.

It is not too often in Burlington that I find myself under a nice sky like this. So I took a few snaps, just to take advantage of the nice day. Also, I am trying out a new layout which is not the most appealing to the eye, but it shows my pictures larger, and that is what is important.

Purchased a new, heavier duty boom and I have been dying to put it through its paces. I also did a DIY mod to my 60 inch umbrella to make the light a bit softer. Annndd...I haven't shot any people (besides some skate shots) with my new 16-35. The weather has sucked recently not including the amazing easter weekend we had, but I was away and busy the entire time. I looked outside this evening to see the rain had stopped and it was clearing up a bit. So I bugged my buddy Travis again to come stand in the mud with me, in very high wind speeds I might add. A brief shooting time before the Montreal game, and just in time for some interesting sky to break out. The shot below is for the time being my favourite from the set. Anyways, the boom held up very well and I can't wait to use it more.

This shot is from some of the first field testing I've done with my new Nikon 16-35 f4 VR lens. So far I am pretty impressed with the lens in every aspect. Wish it was 2.8 but how it is now, it is the perfect weight/balance and the VR is pretty cool. You can almost shoot in the dark with sometimes getting 1/2 hand held shutter speeds.

I borrowed a fog machine from a friend of my dads. I was planning on trying it outside but I learned that if I tried to use it with my portable battery pack, the pack might get fried. So I played it safe and just did a quick shot inside to give it a try.

So...It has been quite a while since I have made a post. I just kept sitting on photos, was busy with tour and vacation and work that by the time I would get around to posting, I had been sitting on them so long I didn't feel like sharing...but then my "fans" (pretty much just my family) were in an outrage regarding my lack of updates.

Like I had said earlier, we had a day off on our second day...and it rained..well here is the result of all that rain on our handmade under-weather sealed trailer. Some wet boxes..plenty of dripping water...and some bordem, but no major damage and I think the problem has since been addressed, so we go on!

So...I am still in fact, alive, regardless of what my lack of updates would have you thinking. I've been sitting on photographs for so long...I kept putting off updates, for whatever reasons, and now I am sick of those photographs...so they may never see the light of day on this blog.
I recently joined the band oceans, recorded a full length album, and am abou to start tour today (July 10th) out east and back. So this venture has kept me busy. I hope to be maiking at least every other day blog entries documenting the tour. I've been shooting lots lately, which a nice change in pace, but this school year (my college education) is nearing its end. With that comes all kinds of stress. Yet another school assignment. We were to shoot some different shots of a model and design a Comp Card with the shots. I ended up shooting a friend i met at Humber named Amber who was a trooper since it was so cold when we shot the outside stuff. I'm not much of a designer, so here are the shots I used.

For a school assignment I had to photograph a location business portrait. The photo was supposed to illustrate what the company does and show the environment. The nice people at Samo Media (http://www.samomedia.com/) were good enough to let me bug them for an afternoon. They were great people and make some cool stuff. It would seem I haven't posted any new pictures for quite a while, but that does not mean I haven't been doing anything. School is starting to get busy and right now I'm building up my portfolio and also building an actual website. So I will soon have a real dot com website which I am very excited for. This blog is long over due for an overhaul and I was planning on doing it once my website is up and running. But I am not sure when that will be. So for now I changed somethings around and made this a lot more similar to how my website looks. And I swear there is a plethora of new photos coming.

Went to Detroit to watch one of my favourite bands ever play their last set. I was debating whether or not I should bring my camera because I was not sure how sketchy the town was...and it was sketchy. Bulletproof glass on the counters of fast food restaurants made me uneasy. It was a rough show to shoot for other reasons, but I'm glad I have something to remember it buy. But for now I think I will let my lungs rest for a bit and stay out of America. We definitely take for granted our no smoking laws.

Highlight of the night-Crossing the border with too much cereal and RC cola. And Brooks running reds on a cell phone in front of a bunch of border police!

Trip to the States

We went to the Eastman House in Rochester NY as part of a field trip for a class. The trip was alot of fun, but it would of been nice to stay the whole night. This is just a big mess of photos from the day.

This picture was the cause of the colossal paint fail pictured below.

John was jumping, trying to showup in the sunglasses reflection. He spent the remaining hours of the trip like that.

Everyone had a good laugh at the whole pant thing later.

I was surprised that he did this one, the set wasn't very wide and there are some nice hand rails to smack your face on at the landing.

Nate was also trying to land a 3 flip on that same set he landed the kickflip, but it proved to be very difficult. he banged himself up a bit in the name of art.

And the leaves are almost starting to show it. Here are a few snap shots i took for a project that involves organizing files...pretty much just using up shutter actuation. Anyways, shot these with a newly acquired 35mm f2, so I decided to try it out. I'll probably make an update at the end of the weekend with some things I've got on the go. I also rented a tilt/shift lens for the weekend..so expect a post full of pointless selective focus pictures!

Was shooting some live shots for a band called cecilia rise on the weekend, decided to take a few shots of my friends band life in sound, their light set up was appropriate to try some available light shots. so i snapped a few and did a quick edit.

A few taken from today. We were assigned to shoot portraits using only available daylight and a reflector. We went for a walk in the Arboretum as a class to try out reflectors...some serious business...especially considering this is the final year of this program-tough stuff. Anyways, we managed to have fun with it, I'll usually take any chance to take pictures, so here are a few pics.

I tagged this one on here because it's of people. My mom wanted a picture of my brothers and I because ours is fairly dated. In the most recent one of us, we are all wearing matching t shirts, and are missing many of our baby teeth from our smiles. Not too mention I'm like 6 years old with a buzz cut.

It's been quite a while since my last update. Been busy starting up school again and moving into res. Recently purchased a Nikon D3 and a couple new lenses to keep myself busy, so there will be some updates soon with some school work and general playing around with the gear. My laptop does not want to turn on so my editing has been at a stand still. i think im going to just bite the bullet and start editing on my slow PC until i get the laptop back.

A couple of my good friends from Scarce and I went location hunting for photos. We were passing ideas back and forth for promos and decided to go look. I was unaware we were going to trek through as much forest as we did. So I had fun wearing shorts and no socks. But at least I didn't slip and toss my d70 into the creek. These are just a couple snaps from the adventure.

It was quite a crazy weekend as far as the weather was concerned...plenty of wind, rain and lightning. I wasnt in the best location to photograph the weather, but I got this shot.

I was able to attend Rosesdead's last show ever at the casbah . I was very happy that I made it out to the show because I thought otherwise. Probably will be the best set i will ever see for a long time. I decided to go through my L3 shots and stumbled on this and I really liked the energy of the shot, so I turned it into a wall paper.

It seems only the good bands break up, while other atrocities that should not be aloud to call themselves musicians still run a muck. Rosesdead is one of my favourites, and it is sad to see them go, and unfortunately, this is the only show on their final tour that I will be able to attend (at L3). I took a bunch of photos, then halfway through the set I ditched my gear to enjoy the show.
I was a little less reserved than usual regarding how many photos I post because I'm sure there are some people who love this band and might want to see these.

Recently worked with a street hockey league in burlington. Spent an afternoon hanging out and shooting. I dont know when the last time I shot without flash was but...here are a few from the day.

some teams were lonelier than others...

I've always liked sports and loved hockey, but this is my first time ever shooting "sports"
Anyways it was fun and the league is much bigger than I expected, it made me want to play again so bad.

Did some singles at the church they jam at.

As well as some shots of them jamming, lit by dull work lamps these shots were all at 3200 iso, pretty impressed, especially compared to the d200.
